It’s the bromine escaping from the plastic. It’s put in there as a flame retardant.

We don’t have sunburnt stuff, but we do have little “projector style” bulbs that fall out when they fail, showering hot broken glass on unsuspecting coworkers.

When I first started in IT, everyone’s CRT monitor and keyboard was this color. I still see black plastic keyboards of people who don’t wash their hands (and eat at their desk everyday) that gross me out, I can only imagine what they would look like if this type of plastic was still used.

The stuff tinged at my work isn’t because of light but due to the organic bits in the air. Oh the fun of working on a farm.

I chucked all the stuff on my desk that looked like that and we just got a new printer...it’s black. The break room microwave recently got jacked, the paintor whatever it is came off the bottom of it exposing raw metal.
YOU SHOULD SEE THE SPARKS IT MAKES!

Here is a high grade archival box that has probably been around the department for a decade or two. The discoloration is present even though the box has spent it’s life in a climate controlled space with no exterior light, overhead lights that only come on when activated by motion and that have UV filters on the flourecent tube. More lighting, or an absence of UV filters on flourecent tubes would accelerate this process, as does higher or fluctuating temperatures. Document housing is important.
That microfisce is awesome. It is actually a tremendously stable storage medium. If you keep it away from light and heat so that the binding agent in the film doesn’t break down, it essentially has a lifespan of from now on.

There’s probably some of that in there too. However most of our chemicals are fairly safe. People don’t want dangerous ones in meat until it reaches McDonalds and other restaurants right?

They’re just plastic tubes that slide over the fluorescent tubes. They usually fliter 90 some-odd percent of UV radiation from fluorescent lights. Given that they cost $7 or $8 per tube (and I want the say the lifespan is about that of the bulb), I would not expect them to be present in too many places that are not an archive. Even within the University Library, they are only present in our department.

Even worse is GPS : Gold Plastic Syndrome. Basically, there are some toys from late in Generation 1 (87-88) through to the 2007 movie that will crumble due to faulty chemistry of metalic gold or brown plastic. Unlike yellowed toys, there’s nothing you can do about GPS-aflicted toys, either to prevent it or correct it.

It’s disgusting! One in particular LOVED fried chicken, but not napkins. One day I finally brought my own keyboard with me to troubleshoot her PC, to give her a hint. Thank god I no longer have to deal with her.

Yeah, within reason. Since it’s a chemistry problem, there’s no way to say 100% something won’t ever fall vicitim to GPS (no matter what precautions you take), you’re taking a gamble even with MISB toys. I had a Beast Wars Grimlock that suffered so bad I wound up buying a junker Dinobot off eBay, painting the donor parts gold, and doing a major transplant. I haven’t transformed my BW Transmetal Megatron for years for fear of it snapping in half .

we haven’t used them in ages but our owner doesn’t want to chunk them in the trash. They just sit there collecting Everest amounts of dust. He have card catalogs for Volvo, Aston, Lotus, Mercedes and I believe SAAB also
